No gay person wants the government to force religious institutions to sanctify any relationship they don't agree withThe topic of gay marriage is misunderstood by many as the LGBT community's desire to have commitment ceremonies in churches, synagogues and mosques. This couldn't be farther from the truth! The drive for equality involves property inheritance, hospital visitation, Social Security benefits, estate taxes, retirement savings, family leave, immigration rights, nursing homes, pensions and a myriad of other issues that fair-minded Americans agree with. In the United States, our tradition has developed such that the religious aspect of marriage has become deeply intertwined with the civil rights granted to two people who choose to enter a committed relationship. The LGBT community seeks the same civil rights as everyone else—nothing more, nothing less.
